the graceful mug set of 4 was inspired by the tuareg tribe of north-west africa – a group of people that carrol boyes interacted with during her travels to morocco.
she was particularly fascinated with their love for the colour indigo, which they used to dye their bodies and clothing. the dye was made from the leaves of parasitic plants, which in some parts of west africa were considered valuable enough to be used as currency.
these designs, fondly referred to as the indigo girls, capture her admiration for these nomadic people.
